Photographic intention:
This image was produced as a control condition image in order to provide a baseline for comparison with the variable condition image. -
Problem recognition:
The bilateral direct softbox lighting provides a stable view of the overall form and outline of the object. However, strong specular highlights appear on the surface, particularly around the central body and painted pattern. These highlights partially reduce colour information and surface detail. -
Visual observation:
The image records the overall form and colour of the Buncheong ware object, but the surface appears smoother and glossier than expected. Subtle surface irregularities, slip texture, and brush-like traces are not sufficiently visible. -
Interpretive significance:
This image shows that a visually clear digital image may still fail to explain how surface texture and materiality are affected by lighting conditions. For this reason, the image requires paradata in order to be interpreted as a record.
