Photographic intention:
This image was produced to reduce the strong specular highlights observed in the control condition image and to record the surface texture and colour information of the Buncheong ware object more stably. -
Problem recognition:
In the control condition image, direct light from the left and right softboxes produced bright highlights around the central body and painted pattern. These highlights caused partial loss of colour information and surface detail, and made the relatively matte Buncheong surface appear smoother and glossier. -
Adjustment process:
The direct lighting arrangement was modified by bouncing the light source toward the ceiling and redistributing the diffused light with a reflector. This adjustment was not intended simply to darken the image, but to reduce direct specular reflection while maintaining sufficient visibility of surface information. -
Visual observation:
In the variable condition image, the strong highlights are reduced. Colour information around the pattern and background surface is more stable, and the surface detail is better preserved. Softer tonal transitions along the curved body make the surface irregularities and material qualities more naturally visible. -
Interpretive significance:
This image demonstrates that the visual information conveyed by a digital image is shaped by lighting conditions and photographic judgement. The comparison with the control condition image shows why paradata is necessary for interpreting ceramic digital images as records.
