Photographic intention:
This image was produced to reduce the strong specular reflections generated by direct softbox lighting and to record the celadon glaze colour, decorative details, and surface information more consistently. The intention was not to create a more aesthetically pleasing image, but to reduce lighting-induced distortion in the visual record. -
Problem recognition:
In the control condition image, direct light from the left and right softboxes produced bright specular highlights on the glossy glazed surface, particularly around the central body and curved areas. These reflections weakened the visibility of some decorative and surface details and caused the green-blue glaze colour to appear brighter, flatter, and less visually deep. -
Adjustment process:
The direct softbox arrangement was removed and replaced with an indirect lighting structure using a reflector. Light was redirected so that it reached the object after reflection rather than striking the glazed surface directly. This adjustment was intended to reduce the strong specular component without simply lowering the overall exposure. -
Visual observation:
In the variable condition image, the bright highlights visible on the central body and curved surface are reduced. Decorative motifs and surface details appear more consistently visible across the object. The green-blue glaze colour no longer appears excessively bright or flat and is perceived with greater visual depth and continuity. -
Interpretive significance:
The comparison demonstrates that reflection control changes the type of information made visible in the image. The apparent improvement in colour depth and surface detail does not indicate a change in the object itself, but results from a change in the lighting structure. Recording this process as paradata allows viewers to distinguish the material properties of the celadon from visual effects produced by photographic conditions.
