Photographic intention: This image was produced as a control condition image to provide a baseline for comparison with the variable condition image. Direct bilateral softbox lighting was used to record the overall form, white porcelain body, and blue decoration under a consistent lighting arrangement.

Problem recognition: Direct bilateral softbox lighting produced strong highlights on the glazed surface. These highlights overlapped parts of the blue decoration, reduced pattern visibility, and caused the cobalt-blue pigment to appear brighter than expected. The similar brightness of the white porcelain body and background also weakened the visual separation of the object’s outline.

Adjustment process: No corrective adjustment was applied. The bilateral softbox arrangement, direct incident light, and approximately 1 m lighting distance were retained so that the image could function as the control condition.

Visual observation: The image appears bright and evenly illuminated, but reflected highlights partially obscure the blue decoration. The cobalt-blue areas appear relatively bright, while the outer edge of the white porcelain body is not clearly separated from the background.

Interpretive significance: This image demonstrates that high and even illumination does not necessarily produce a sufficient visual record. Direct reflection can reduce pattern legibility, alter colour perception, and weaken the distinction between the object and its background.
